tCheck 2 User Manual

User Manual

tCheck makes it easy to measure the potency of your infused oils and create recipes with exactly the strength that you need. With the addition of the flower & concentrate testing kit, you can also use tCheck to measure the potency of your plant material & concentrates.

tCheck’s patented technology measures infusions in:

  • Ghee / Clarified Butter
  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil / MCT Oil
  • Alcohol

Oils such as coconut oil and butter must be warmed to a clear liquid state¹before measurements can be performed.

WARNING: Certain types of essential oils, hand lotions, and solvents can melt or damage the tray. It is a special type of plastic and specially calibrated to your device. Please only test with clean hands, and do not add other materials to the testing tray besides herb infused oils, butters or alcohol. Hand washing with a soft sponge and non abrasive cleanser is the safest way to take care of your tray. Do not place in the dishwasher. Do not place the tray on a hot surface, or in the microwave. Excessive heat can cloud the tray or damage the surface. Boiling liquids may damage the tray. Drying with a cloth washed with a fabric softener can damage the tray.

When measuring butter, please be sure to only use the clear butter fats. Milk solids will throw off the measurements.

  3. From the app Home screen, tap the button Run Test
  4. If you have connected to a device previously, the app will attempt to connect to this same device.
  5. Select the infusion type you want to test, then tap the button Connect To Device.
  6. The Select a device screen will display showing the name, and ID of your device.
  7. Press your device and tap the Next button.
  8. If your device does not show up, ensure that your device is powered on and the logo is glowing blue-blue-green, then tap Scan.
  9. If your device still doesn’t show up, you can tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner and select “Cycle BLE” to reinitialize Bluetooth on your phone.
  10. If you’re still having trouble finding the device, restart the app, and manually cycle your phone’s Bluetooth off and on.

How to Run a Test

Ensure the sample tray is not inserted into device when powering on — if it is, remove it. tCheck performs power-on self diagnostics and a tray may interfere with these self checks.

Now that your device is paired to your phone, make sure tCheck is on a flat level surface. If your device isn’t paired — see How to pair the device to your phone for more information.

  1. At the “What is the temperature of your infusion?” screen change the temperature of your base infusion material and unselect the checkbox if your infusion has NOT been decarbed. If your material has been decarbed keep the box checked. Click Next.
  2. Ensure the tray slot is empty, click OK — after you make sure the tray slot is empty.
  3. While the device is doing its calibration — Open the sample tray by separating the top and bottom halves.
  4. The top half can be identified by the tCheck logo, put this aside for now.
  5. Place the bottom half of the test tray on a flat level surface, place approximately 4–5 drops of infused oil into the circular well area. A little excess oil is okay.
  6. Now place the top half of the tray onto the bottom, it’s okay if a small amount overflows out of the circular well area.
  7. Ensure that there are no bubbles in the circular well area. See the sample images below.
  8. Insert the tray into the slot, click OK — after you have inserted your tray into the slot.
  9. Testing in progress. Follow any on-screen prompts or instructions that may pop up.
  10. Your results will be displayed. Click OK.

If you are experiencing issues with excess bubbles try reseating the top tray by lifting it slightly from the logo end and placing it back down, or adding a couple more drops of the sample material. Ensure that the excess oil stays within the overflow area and does not flow out of the tray.

Cleaning the Tray

When the test is complete, remove tray and hand wash with liquid dish soap and warm water. Only use the soft side of a sponge. Abrasive cleansers or scouring pad will damage the tray. Do not clean the tray in the dishwasher. Do not use any cloth with fabric softener added. (See Taking care of your tray for more information)

Interpreting Your Results

After the test is complete, your results will be displayed in mg/ml — milligrams of cannabinoids per milliliter of oil. CBV means “Compounds by Volume” which represents the total amount of cannabinoid molecular content per volume of liquid. This display may be changed to show other units such as mg/tsp or mg/tbsp.

An analogy would be dissolved sugar in a cup of water. If someone gives you a cup of sweetened water, CBV is a measure of the amount of granulated sugar that was dissolved in that cup of water. For example, 1 tbsp of sugar into 1 cup of water. (Note: tCheck does not measure sugar)

You can now take your test results and use them in the CBV Calculator to adjust your recipe accordingly.

If You Get OVER Measurement (Dilution):

Any result that displayed as OVER means infused potency is stronger than tCheck is able to measure. Due to the physics that tCheck uses to make measurements, there are certain limits to what it can measure. This is like using a ruler to measure the length of a dinner table. With a bit of care, it can be done with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

The procedure is:

  1. Measure out a precise volume of your infusion (For example .5ml)
  2. Measure out 2x the volume of the uninfused base oil (if you first measured out .5 ml, you would measure out 1ml of the uninfused base)
  3. Mix thoroughly. Proper mixing is vital to getting an accurate reading.
  4. Use tCheck to measure the potency of the diluted solution.
  5. Multiply the measurement reading in mg/ml form by 3. This is the potency of your original infusion. Be sure to use this final amount you have calculated when dosing.

Turning Off Your Device

tCheck automatically powers down after 3 minutes of inactivity so there is no need to press the power button to manually power down the device. To re-awaken the device, simply press the front power button (do not hold the button down). With normal use, a set of AAA batteries should last over 4 months, running several hundred measurements.

Taking Care of Your Device

  • Do not immerse or submerge tCheck device.
  • Hand wash sample tray & swizzle sticks with a soft sponge and liquid household dish soap.
  • Never store a used tray or clean tray in the tCheck unit. Always remove the tray and store both the tray and tCheck in a clean, dry place. Try to keep your tCheck device free of internal dust.

Taking Care of Your Tray

Important! Follow the guidelines below for proper tray care. Even minor damage to your tray can lead to incorrect results. In the event that a new tray is required, you will need to return your device for recalibration with a new tray. If this happened please contactsupport@tcheck.me.

  • Your tCheck 2 tray, if properly cared for, should last the life of the device (roughly 1,000 tests).
  • Hand wash the tray after each test, with liquid household dish soap. Wipe and dry with a soft cloth. Make sure the soft cloth doesn’t have any fabric softener on it. Do not use tissues that have lotion in them (i.e., Puffs Plus).
  • Do not wash the sample tray in the dishwasher, high-temperature water will deform and cloud the plastic.
  • Do not allow boiling hot liquids to touch your tray.
  • If infusion solidifies in the tray before running a test, you will need to wash it and start over.
  • Do not handle your tray unless your hands are clean. Certain lotions, essential oils, and other contaminants can cloud and damage the tray.
  • Do not set your tray down on a hot surface.

Firmware Updates

Periodically, you may receive an email message notifying you that a new firmware version is available. The firmware update process may take up to 90 seconds. Fresh batteries are recommended prior to updating the firmware.

Accuracy

Each individual tCheck device is calibrated at the factory using industry calibrated spectrometer standards. As with lab and industrial-grade spectrometers, tCheck’s accuracy is +/- 10% of full scale. Repeatability of measurements is also within +/- 15%. Because temperature plays an important role in the accuracy of the measurement, all calibration testing is performed with the device and analyte temperatures at 75°F (24°C). Butter is calibrated at 95°F (35°C).

During the measurement step, the app will ask that you remove the tray to ‘zero’ the scale. This step is critical for ensuring an accurate measurement. Additionally, it is important that you properly input the temperature of your infusion as this can have a significant impact on your measurement.
